What got you started in the fitness lifestyle? When did your journey begin?

My journey began in the autumn of 2002, after seeing my first Fitness show. My passion for fitness was already there, but this really got me interested in it and gave me motivation to start competing! I took it to the next level so to speak.

What keeps you moving forward with your training?

My motivation comes from a force within, a dedication and a passion for what I do. Training is what makes me strong, both physically and mentally! The gym is my sanctuary sometimes, and I can always count on it that it won’t disappoint me. I love training and know that it only does good for me.

What are your next goals?

My goal right now is to continue to build up my business so that I can work more with the things I love. At the same time, I will continue my own training and diet regime so that it is possible to compete and/or do some modeling when the opportunity comes along. I prefer to stay in shape all year “just in case” ;)

What is your training routine like?

My training routine nowadays consists of a 3-split program where I divide the muscle groups into three groups. See below.  I usually train with weights 4-5 times a week. This may vary a bit due to time of year and amount of cardio I need or want to do.

Some of my favorite exercises are:

  • Back, Triceps
    • Favorite Exercises:
      1. Deadlift
      2. Standing Barbell Row
      3. Wide Pulldown
      4. Lats Drag
      5. One Arm Dumbbell Row
  • Chest, Shoulders, Abs
    • Favourite Exercises:
      1. Incline Dumbbell Bench Press
      2. Cable Flies
      3. Push-ups
      4. Shoulder Press (both standing and seated)
      5. Lateral Raise
      6. Upward Row
      7. Front Row
      8. Abs (variety of crunches and roll out (red cord)
  • Legs, Abs
    • Favourite Exercises:
      1. Box Squat
      2. Single Leg Split Squat with Dumbbells
      3. Smith Split Squat
      4. Straight-back Straight-Leg Deadlift
      5. Lying Leg Curl
      6. Hip Thrust

What’s your preferred form of cardio?

My preferred form of cardio is outdoor running intervals, uphill and downhill, with great music on my Ipod. Second best, when the weather is bad (or cold!) are intervals either on a spinning bike or cardio elliptical machine. When I do the necessary cuts in my diet, the definitions will come. .. ”Abs are made in the kitchen”

What does your diet consist of?

My diet consists of clean food only, all year round. I do not compromise, ever! No sugar, white flour, unhealthy fats or unnecessary additives. I prefer low carb food as a rule, and only use more carbs if I need to reefed to fill up depleted glycogen stores. In addition, I try to eat organic as long as it is possible and available.

When I’m not on a specific diet plan, I simply prefer to eat more of the good food, and indulge in homemade protein bars, truffles, fudge, sweets, cakes, muffins and pancakes!

Many of my favorite meals and recipes, you can see by following my instagram: @nina_furseth – where all recipes are in English.

Do you bulk/cut or stay lean all year?

I am not a fan of the bulk/cut system, so I stay lean all year. So, when I am on a specific diet for some contest, modeling or other, I do not have to diet very long before I’m ready.

Do you listen to music while working out? What are you typically listening to?

Yes indeed! Music when working out is essential! Especially when doing cardio. I can not function without it. I am a trance, hard-dance, techno kind of girl when it comes to work-out music. I need the bass and beat, and the ongoing progressive build-up from the music so that I just follow it to the max. But of course I like variations, so some R&B and rap is also great in between.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of being both European and Overall Bodyfitness Champion in 2010. That was an overwhelming experience and the best reward ever, after so many years of hard work in the gym. I am also proud of my lifestyle, and that I am 100 % dedicated to what I do, say and stand for when it comes to training, health and fitness!

Are there any athletes, fitness models or bodybuilders that inspire you?

When I started competing, Lena Johannesen-Natividad inspired me a lot. In addition, Pauline Nordin really inspires me through her Fighter diet concept.

Any tips for readers who want to get a pysique like yours?

My best tips to you on how to get an awesome physique is:  train hard, lift heavy, do your cardio and eat as clean as possible all year round!

Be dedicated, set goals, do what it takes, and remember to be patient. Building muscles takes time, but when doing it right, you will be rewarded :-)
